Indeed, this year is different in every aspect. Normally what happens is Seven days before the festival, the goddess is beckoned to descend on earth through an invocation called the Mahalaya. However, this year the much-awaited festival is been held a month after Mahalaya. According to Bisuddha Siddhanta and Suryasiddhanta, both schools of almanacs, the unusual gap between Mahalaya and Durga Puja is because of a phenomenon called ‘mala mash’ or a lunar month that has two new moons. During this month, no auspicious festival or rituals can be observed. and thus,Durga Puja is been held after it is over. The angry aspect of shakti is Durga, her blood curdling red eyes reveals a rage with a hint of satisfaction that justice has been served and red is her sari depicting anger of the warrior goddess exterminating hordes of evil doers drenching the earth with blood. Her ornaments and weapons are white/silver signifying peace and purity. The traditional skin tone or color of Goddess Durga (in Bengal and eastern parts of India) is turmeric yellow. Because of her turmeric yellow skin the Goddess is identified as haldi-mukhi or turmeric-faced. The colour yellow is luminous. It is the colour of life giving light - the colour that repels negativity. This yellow colour connects the goddess with gold, with the harvest, with lions, and all things Mangala(auspicious).
